Staging blocks for Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
We were commissioned to design and build these staging blocks to help facilitate socially distanced performances on the newly extended BSO stage - their musicians needed a safe and stable elevated seating position.
Whilst the brief was relatively straight forward, we wanted to ensure that these utilitarian pieces got just as much attention and design development as we would give any other project.
We built the staging blocks from top quality Birch plywood and carefully stained them in a colour that sat comfortably against the existing stage and Lighthouse Theatre interior.
The angled openings at the bases of each block are a both functional and aesthetic design choice - providing space for the legs of music stands, and reducing the visual weight of the flat sides of the blocks.
Each block was fitted with chamfered kick rail along three sides and had a non-slip finish applied as a safety measure.
Eight blocks of two different heights were built and delivered in total and will be serving the Orchestra for many years to come.
